Night Hiking within Camp Boundaries
From The Camp Wiki
Night Hiking within the borders of your camp works especially well if you have a large camp, but can be done effectively within smaller camps as well. Whenever possible, hike in areas without lights, or have the lights turned off for part of the evening or night to get the best "night" effects.
Night hiking can be done for a variety of reasons:
- To get your group somewhere special for a special event such as FunNapping
- To notice things about the night that you wouldn't otehrwise see
- To follow a cateye trail
- To listen for nature sounds
- To build trust within your group
- To build mystery as part of your programming
- custom papers
Whenever possible, you should have one adult or leader at the front of your group, and one at the back. This is true even of small groups (very small groups of, say 4 or 5, do not require a second person for visibility - but remember that it is always wise to have a second adult around to protect your reputation and to help in the case of an emergency). It may become impossible to glance behind your shoulder and see if everyone is keeping up. Etc. etc. more safety to follow.
Hiking with camp's boundaries allows you to set up activities ahead of time. Bits of reflectors or reflective taped can be placed on trees, with along a well-defined trail to help lead the group along the trail, or sporratically throughout the woods as one more thing to "spot." A string can be tied in a straight line or a maze of sorts, taht group members have to follow alone or in pairs. Blah blah blah more ideas to come.
(This is just a very quick sketch - I promise to come back and fill out this page quite a bit. As always, feel free to add to it - or edit it - in the mean time)
